Grandma used to make it from scratch, from a bag of cranberries. Turned out it wasn't a secret recipe-- the receipe was printed on the bag, but it was simple and tasty. Much tangier than the canned variety. One year I volunteered to make Grandma's cranberry sauce as my contribution to my friend's dinner at his place. I accidentally let it boil over and it made a sticky icky mess all over his stove and down in the drip catch part. Yuck. He cleaned it up. What a great guy. How come I didn't clean it? Can't remember.
My ex-husband liked to get the canned variety and serve it so that it remained perfectly in the can-shape, with those ridges. It was an important part of the presentation. Then he'd slice off disk-shaped pieces. Years after we split up I'd cringe when people used the canned type and stirred it up, erasing the can shape completely. The sauce should be served proudly, with it's canned-ness intact.
Google has the can-shape cranberry sauce featured in the holiday logo for today.
Wishing you all happy cranberry sauce experiences today.
