I think the image you have of yourself in your head has a lot to do with what you see in the mirror. I remember a few days ago that after watching some TV I was feeling pretty crappy about myself and when I looked in the mirror I thought my face looked really fat for some reason. I started to wonder about it though and the next day when I looked in the mirror my face was back to normal. I bet you start to think badly about yourself in public and what you see in the mirror changes. You know, your mind makes up a lot of stuff in your vision that isn't really there. Optical illusions are an example of your mind not seeing what's there.
I think what you need to do is just think to yourself that you look good while you're walking around in public and to start noticing any reactions from other people that you might think is because they think you look good. Remember those reactions and think back on them any time you start to doubt yourself or when you're looking in a mirror at a public place and see a distorted image of yourself.
