I use IRC a lot, and a few weeks ago I posted on the Admin board that I would be willing to set up and help to run a new channel on IRC just for PB regulars to use, if anyone was interested.
Nobody seemed interested!
The advantage of IRC over other chat formats is that it can have moderators; the channel can be kept private so that only people who know about it, know it is there; and it can also be made so that only "voiced" people can type to channel - meaning, only "approved" people or genuine PB members - no fly-bys or troublemakers.
I have an old and cranky computer which simply does not handle Yahoo chat (or any browser-based chat) very well - and I also know of people (connected to my hobby) who got so fed up with the continual boot-offs that they left Yahoo chat and went elsewhere.
There's an IRC network I am familiar with that is family-friendly and doesn't allow sex channels, which might be a good choice to host a channel specially for us :)
