Z--
Just personal preference, and a bit of having gone thru the teens, 20's, 30's and 40's. I figure if you give life a fair shot for a half a century, and a good faith effort, then that's enough. In the 20's it is so easy to feel the crushing weight of developing into an adult, in the 30's there is more self-acceptance, but also more expectations for success and getting established in life that we can beat ourselves up with, in the 40's things start changing again, this time more physiologically that we can again use (in our youth oriented culture) to flog ourselves. Add on a little chemical imbalance to all that, and it's way too easy to make a final decision way too early--in the midst of some external event or existential angst that may well pass with time and development (the difference, for example, of being 20 versus 40).
If one is 50 years old, lived a half century, has felt suicidal most or all of that time, has never felt 'good' for more than a few months, has done therapy, has done meds, religion, or other tries at improving---well, 50 years of that seems like plenty to me.
This is a combination of no science, my personal opinion, some grad study in psychology, and what appeals to me rationally. That's all.
