BL--struck with or struck by?

BL,
I was reading a story about a man who was hit with a baseball bat. The story said "the man was struck by a baseball bat" and I thought it should be struck 'with' a baseball bat. Because, wouldn't the man have been struck 'by' the individual wielding the bat?

Hope you'll let me know,
Shar
