Go for it, Tabitha. 39 is definitely not too old to be changing careers! Have you considered rehabilitation case management/counselling? It can pay quite well. (I have a friend who now combines 3 days a week working at a hospital with 2 days running her own consultancy. She is doing very well.) Here in Australia you can get into a graduate diploma with any undergraduate degree. Many employers (eg; our Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service) actually prefer more mature candidates with several years of experience in the workforce.
Once you put together some experience in the field, you can specialise in helping paricular groups of people (such as brain injury patients or the mentally ill) return to work. This may be a good choice for if you are more inroverted and are worried about spending every second of the day with people. There will still be plenty of interaction with people - but there is so much paperwork to be done that you will also spend considerable periods on your own. From what I understand, it can be a rewarding and challenging field. (Am considering entering it myself.)
Whatever you decide, go for it!!
Good luck,
Alara
