While I lived on the Prairies (wasn't too fond of that part of the country), the lilacs were a definite highlight of my time there. There was a lilac hedge between my place & the neighbours. It was solid & filled with blooms from about 4 feet up to the top about 12 feet. The air smelled heavenly for those few short weeks. I'd plant my vegetable garden, next to the hedge, to the constant happy drone of bees buzzing among the blossoms. Where I live now, the lilacs never get so magnificent. They love the alkaline soil like the prairies had. Here, it's better suited to rhodos, heather, & other acidic plants.
