I think the phenomenon you're describing is typical for parents of 14 year olds. I'm still trying to figure out how my 14 year old daughter and I can spend as much time together as we do, with her making no effort at conversation and totally repeling all of my feeble attempts at conversation. The only consolation is that I have a 17 year old son, who used to be as awful but is now actually quite sweet. It's hard when you're "in the moment" to see this as anything other than the real deal.
