Sometimes pets and small children are good sources of actual fun. If I'm really down, I get jealous/bitter, but if I'm just bored I enjoy their ridiculousness.
I say this as our dumb cat stares up blankly at me from the lap of a giant stuffed gorilla. He has no idea how silly he looks.
