I forgot that you'd also asked if depression can cause you to forget things. It and the stress definately can, but I don't think very often causes the severity of memory loss you mentioned.
Medication can cause that type of amnesia though, especially benzodiazepines.
It sounds like something that you really need to discuss with an empathetic Dr.
Depression has so many symptoms, and they are very individual.
Other illnesses can often cause depressive symptoms so having that investigated
is extremely important.
