Casaba melon

Posted by Tabi T. Ha on July 30, 2002, at 3:17:21

Somehow I got inspired to try a new exotic fruit. So, after much time browsing the produce section, I settled on a casaba melon. It was glowing so brightly yellow and green under the flourescent lights. And so *large* for a fruit. It looked so incongruous in my cart next to the frozen meals and grape soda. So much like actual FOOD.

Not knowing how to judge its ripeness, I thought I'd apply the standard cantaloupe test and wait until it got a little soft at the base. Two days seemed enough. Then.... I got out my largest knife and Hack! Chop! Slice! neatly quartered it. Next, a smaller knife to remove the seeds. I put the three extra portions in airtight plastic bags and placed them in the refrigerator.

Finally I was alone with my exotic melon quarter. I scooped a bit of its flesh out with a spoon. It tasted kind of like a cross between watermelon rind and honeydew. A pleasing texture, not too crunchy, not too slimy. A fresh aroma. After eating it, I realized I felt energized, not like the blecchy feeling from a candy binge. Mental note: eat more fruit.

Oh, I know, you were probably expecting fruit porn, but I lack the imagination.
