I dont know how much its a British rather than international thing, but so many people dont praise others here, or accept any praise when they are given it.
Lots of times people have said nice things about other people to me, and if I ask them if they have told this person direct, they say no and look really surprised at my question. I do try and share what I appreciate about others with them directly, on a completely genuine level. Just a short comment like 'thank you for taking time to help me with that problem; you're a great listener' or 'that shirt looks great!'.
They are often surprised I should say something, and some immediately get embarrassed and rush into 'yes,but...' and try and brush it off.
I do think its well worth giving praise/thanks, and learning to accept it and just say 'thanks' in reply!
