Angel, going to relate a tax story of mine. My ex- hadn't filed his tax forms for 6 years when we separated. This meant that I wasn't able to receive GST & whatever it is that the government gives as a refund to moms with little kids (the name escapes me) or anything else.
After he left, I wanted to be able to file my forms & receive my money, but when I phoned the help-line I was told they could do nothing until I had he filled his forms out for those years. I phoned again & was told his info was strictly confidential & I was powerless. They'd decide to go after him when they felt like it & seeing nothing had been done for the previous 6 years, they were in no hurry.
BUT I did have his SIN so I filled out my forms as best as possible & attached a note saying I couldn't include other info as I didn't know what it was but here was my ex-husband's SIN. Within a month, I received about $3,000 dollars back from all those years & they went after him. With the money, I paid for my first year tuition, bought a reasonable computer, & some second-hand furniture to sit on for the living room (we were using the floor).
Yes, the government can do amazing things with a little impetus.
