Cass,
When I was very young, I actually thought that breaking a leg might not be so bad -- the attention, the experience, etc. Yikes! In my early 20s, I was a Red Cross first aid instructor and among the first group of EMTs trained in our county. What I saw was the terrible effects of trauma, the cost to families and businesses.... In short, I resolved to be much more careful with my body and not treat the potential for injury with such a cavalier attitude.
(By the way, I'm saying this about me -- I'm not suggesting in any way that your friend was careless or incautious -- just pointing out my own foolishness.)
All of which is to say, I have a great deal of painful empathy for your friend and his suffering, and I realize all too well what a HUGE event this is in his life, and therefore in yours. He is so fortunate to have you as a friend, Cass. I know your positiveness and loving concern will help him heal much more quickly.
My good thoughts and prayers go out to both of you.
Much love,
Mark H.
