yes, it is a little depressing. especially, what was with the Laura Gianocomo (sp?) character's encounter with her father? that was too extreme.
in college, in my days :), there was a Huge movement to make your friends your family. Group therapy pushed this (one reason I stopped) and the surroundings just supported it. The term "dysfunctional" was thrown around like a pie.
as you get older, you realize how important your family is, how friends come and go. but i suppose if family life had been as difficult as it was for Stuart, you might seek "family" elsewhere.
I consider my best friends, part of an extended family. But this probably also comes from having a few very good friends, not many aquaintances.
