I give a big vote for Wendy B's selections and while I don't have them all, I am familiar with these artists (i.e. heard songs, seen live or have a different album by the artist). [and how 'bout Gillian Welch's "Revival"?]
But, probably the highest rave I have is for sar's Ryan Adam's "Heartbreaker" cd [he was the former lead singer of Wendy B's suggested band Whiskeytown].
Just off-hand, I'd throw in the soundtrack from the movie "Magnolia" which features a lot of great stuff from Aimee Mann.
One of my favorite bands is Wilco, but there are only some songs which really work for depression. Just off-hand, most recommended would be "She's A Jar" and "How to Fight Loneliness" off of Summerteeth. (this latter song was also featured in the soundtrack for the movie "Girl, Interrupted")
[p.s. hi, again, wend. i've been, oh just here and there, in and out, that is me. :) also, Wilco's playin' the Electric Factory on 9/29 and Ryan Adams at the TLA on 10/6]
