Radio segment on blood test technology?

Posted by Abby on August 1, 2001, at 0:59:19

I thought I heard a radio segment on one of the public radio programs about blood tests and the doctor patient relationship, but I was half asleep and am not sure.

Basically the argument was that new technologies make blood work more easily accessible outside of a hospital laboratory.

A lot of doctors were saying how terrible it would be if people could get their cholesterol checked without consulting their doctor, because they wouldn't know how to interpret them. Undoubtedly there would be people who would avoid going to doctors, but they also pointed out that it would be possible to keep medical records private.

I was thinking about this, because I misplaced a script for a lithium level. My insurance covers very little of the cost. I can give away pints of blood, but I can't tell someone to analyse my blood a certain way. It isn't as though I wanted to ingest anything.

Anyhow, if you know where I might have heard this, can you let me know?

Thanks,
Abby
