This has been a controversial topic here in the past. Some people will say it really helps with depression. Others will say "you don't understand. You must not really be depressed. We're not capable of motivating ourselves to do it."
I may get that reaction, but I have no doubt running and going to the gym help. I am training for my fourth marathon. A couple of years back I got laughed off of here with response like clearly I had no concept of what depression is. I do. I've had three major episodes. But it's been proven that the natural endorphins help. And when I am training for a marathon, I have no choice but to stick to a training schedule and get my behind out there to train. And it has added benefits, like being able to eat what you want and not worry about it. And feeling proud of what you are doing.
Setting a goal, excercise-wise and forcing yourself to keep it really helps. I know some will say, "but if I can't get out of bed..." But if you are at able to make yourself a commitment toward an exercise goal, there is a real payoff. For me anyway
