Noa, hypnotherapy is not at all dangerous. It is really just a relaxation technique that may allow a person to focus and allow things to come into their mind that they might not have thought of before. But hypnosis doesn't not remove your defenses, if they're not ready to come down. And it doesn't create false memories. All memories, always recalled, or newly recalled have some distortions Traumatic repressed memories are most often real. There is a group, the false memory society, or whatever, which was started by parents who were accused by their daughter, a PhD psychologist of abusing her and have both denied it and reached out for other parents who have been accused.
Most retrieved memories are collaborated--you might want to look at the thread I left for Kristi on PB. Their is one reseacher who is doing quite unsophisticated research in Seattle, I think, who is their mentor. She has testified in dozens of their cases. She is not at all respected by other research psychologists in the memory field. Yet she, unfortunately, is known by the general public because she gets excellent publicity (talk shows, etc.) She is the one who has put out there that therapists are creating memories for their patients in the type of question they ask.
And as far as the people who said they were abused then recall their statements, I think that has less to do with truth, than with fear of their families. When secrets get out of families, the fragile structure of those families deteriorates, and some people can't handle it.
As far as using "truth drugs", very few psychiatrists use them. Everyone is afraid of getting sued these days. And they do leave more margin for allowing confusion between reality and dreamlike images, and are probably better left out of the therapy process.
