social anxiety

Posted by sar on March 6, 2001, at 15:18:40

What are your thoughts on social anxiety and non-medical treatment?

My main symptoms are muscle tension, hand trembling, silence, nervous laughter, lightheadedness, heart racing. I'm trying to decide where to live when I return to collegetown--immerse myself with strangers my own age (dorm-style situation) or live alone? I've lived in a dorm-style situation for the past 3 years and have *slowly* made progress in behavior improvement and comfortableness...but I'm sick of feeling as if this social anxiety is a price *other* people are unwittingly forced to pay along with me!

I want to be around people but I am avoidant...last year my depression and drinking alienated most people. & been called "aloof," etc. What's y'all's take on this? Have you been around social phobics? How did it make you feel? Social phobics, do you think it's best to immerse or partially withdraw?

thanks for your help.
