The magnetic field is applied in rapid flux and it is supposed to induce the same electric current as ECT. However, magnetic field pass more comfortably through the bone and tissues. So, with this technique, you do not need anesthesia, no need to induce a siezure, and little or no cognitive disruptions (according to the Janicak Handbook of Psychopharmacotherapy). You guys might be interested to look into it. The Handbook of Psychopharmacotherapy (which is a widely used professional handbook) lists the comparisons between ECT and rTMS. The handbook is written by Philip G. Janicak. It is the 1999 edition.
