Hi,
Because so many of you helped me with my bout of self-injury a while ago, I wanted to let you all know how the treatment is going. We were talking about dissociation on the other board and because this is such an integral part of what I'm going through, I hope someone may benefit. I found one of the very few therapists who does DBT (the recommended therapy for those with dissociative disorders, borderline personality, self-injurers, etc.) A large part of the time is spent making me feel safe, while this is a female therapist (for those having abuse issues involving men), I also feel safe with my male psychiatrist, so I guess it's more of a personal response than gender thing. She brings her dog to work- I guess a lot of her clients relate better to animals than people (me for one). We are also working on my grounding skills- I do this thing with my fingers and seem to dig my nails into my hand (something I always thought was a nervous habit), but apparently I am grounding myself. This is a really slow process, with a lot of homework- but I hope to learn healthy coping skills so I don't turn to the ones I learned in childhood (dissociation) or as a teen- drugs and cutting. Take care all- Judy
