I thought I had BPD once and mentioned it to my pdoc. He laughed. Really. He asked me why I believed it and I mentioned all of the symptoms I have which match the profile. He said that probably 80% of the general population has symptoms that match the criteria; it is the DEGREE to which the criteria are met which makes the diagnosis. I still believe I have *weak* BPD, but I believe my pdoc is right: The criteria are really too general.
