Therapy Poll analysis and discussions

Posted by Rzip on December 8, 2000, at 15:15:28

Hi everyone!

I wanted to start a new thread so that I would not be accused of answering my own posts.

I get the feeling people on this board do not like replying to my posts anymore.

Anyway, on December 1, 2000, I started a poll on Psycho-Babble Open on "What do you guys think about TALK therapy..."

Time-limit:
11.11% said ten months
5.56% said two years
And no one picked five or more years

Analysis:
1) You guys are very good clients, works hard at your problems and aggressively get them resolved within the ten months of therapy. However, only 5.56% of you guys agree that effective results should take place away from therapy settings. I guess no one likes homework these days. So, that would lead me to hypothesize that...
2) Many of you are embarrassed to admit that you have been in TALK therapy for five or more years because no one voted for that choice. So, you obviously do not think that the duration should be that long. Although, there are the obvious special instances where long, long-term therapy is necessary. But I think that the only way we can get the psychotherapy profession to benefit the clients, us, is to actively work on detaching from it...you know, practice what you learned in therapy in the real-life setting. And on that note, 27.78% of you agree that therapy should be challenging. But only 16.67% said therapy should be comforting. So, my question is why isn't there a higher percentage of you guys voting for "therapy should be comforting"? I think therapy should be challenging, but more importantly, it should be a pleasant experience, you know. Who wants a storky therapist or anyone else for that matter? I say fire those dull and too serious therapists, and find a nicer one. You might be more productive and hence save more money, and go out and enjoy life more.

11.11% of you guys voted for "I do not know how to terminat my therapy", and only 5.56% said "I really like my therapist/I do not want to hurt my therapists's feelings"...so maybe the issue of termination or feeling ready to move on (but not knowing how) should be open to discussions here.

Finally 11.11% of you guys picked "I have a set goal for my therapy length and the treatment I expect to get out of it".

I am on holiday vacation now, so I be able to respond a great deal (till Dec. 22nd that is).
