How it should have been

Posted by deirdrehbrt on March 9, 2006, at 20:33:04

A poem, a wish

Feeling low today, and I found this.
I wrote it a while ago while wishing things had been different when I was a child. I try to live it with my daughters.

A parent is someone who loves you.
Who loves the you that you are,
and not merely the you that they want you to be,
who is interested and supportive of your dreams,
rather than their dreams for you.
An advocate,
a confidant,
empowering,
a friend.
A parent will never belittle you for your fears,
humiliate you on purpose,
abandon you,
or threaten to do so.
A parent loves you,
wants the best for you,
and asks only that you do your best in return.
They are there with a hand when you fall,
a shoulder when you cry,
a kiss,
when you need it,
or not,
and a band-aid for the bumps and scrapes.
A parent loves you and wants the best for you.
They do all of these things,
or at least try to.
A good parent doesn't have to ask or beg for love.

Blessings,
--Dee
