Incident

Posted by Susan47 on April 30, 2005, at 12:04:38

Last week I was at a local cutesy girl-stuff yummy store. I was intently admiring a pair of earrings with the salesperson at the counter, I'd picked them up from the display window and brought them back. We were talking about them, their price and such (boohoo) and they get them in regularly etc (yay) .. they were gorgeous, just the sort of thing I love, really femme you know, sparkly ... anyway I was turning around and met the gaze of an older woman, who was staring at me as though I were trying to steal something. It was odd, I gave her a tentative half-smile when I realized she wasn't a salesclerk, because that's how much her look said, Are you stealing? Anyway I walked away and put the earrings in the window and as I walked back again, she was saying to an older woman, her mother perhaps, gesturing to me and under her breath and not taking her eyes off me, "That's her that's her", kind of poking the older woman. I'm baffled, I think I must be hallucinating, you know, hearing things. I wonder if I do that sometimes. Because I think I might've had a puff that morning, to get myself out. Anyway this older woman was really cute. She looks up at me with these big round innocent eyes, you know, with a really open expression, like, I'm smart but I'm not showing it, and gazes at me unblinkingly (it was weird, okay) for long seconds, I give them both a tentative smile is is only kind of half-returned by the daughter .. I'm at the counter and the daughter gets so close to me she's touching me, her arm, you know? And I'm thinking, she's trying to get something from me, what is she doing? She doesn't need to be this close, there's so much room in here. So I just turn around and leave, but I see she's being really bossy now with this older woman, god don't you hate to see children treating their capable older parents like little kids? Aaagggh. And I'm thinking, okay, this was one hell of a hallucination, and I think you're paranoid, Susan.
I hate it when stuff like this happens. Hate it. Because you never ever know what's going through someone else's mind, and some people's behaviour is so curious, so incredibly interesting.
