I like this blog post about unhelpful ways to think about mental illness, and more helpful ways.
https://srconstantin.wordpress.com/2016/12/12/sane-thinking-about-mental-problems/
I was very susceptible to the idea of the therapist as the wise healer who knew what I needed, and medication management as a route to that med combo that would make my brain "normal". This led to disillusionment, and made me vulnerable to exploitation.
Like the author of this piece, I wish I'd known how to think of mental illness management as gaining tools and skills to help me function and feel better despite my janky brain.
