For Deneb. I am reading Complications by Atul Gawande about his experience as a resident in surgery. It's not that comforting. Residents make mistakes, but they are supervised by attendings. On the other hand, one of the things he writes about is that attendings make mistakes too. We are all guinea pigs to teach residents, then to teach experienced doctors new procedures, then to deal with doctors who are having bad days or bad periods. It's complicated. Personally, I will only go to teaching hospitals. I realize I am dealing a lot with residents, but I also realize that the attendings are supervising them and are some of the best, most experienced docs in the business. If they weren't, they wouldn't be on the faculty of a teaching hospital.I recently had a physical and most of it was carried out by a resident in internal medicine. He was nervous, but fine. My regular doc was with him the entire time.
