I ended therapy with my p-doc after five years. Then, six months later I started seeing him once a month. But when we were ending weekly therapy, we talked a lot about what progress I had made, how intense and profound the process had been, how we really cared for one another and wished one another well. I found a quote from a psych text that said a therapist must join in the patient's dance. I bought him an African rock sculpture of two figures dancing and wrote him a card with the quote and thanked him for dancing with me. He was very touched.
After seven years, it's worth trying to create a meaningful ending even if that means taking a few more sessions to talk about the process and what it has meant for both of you.
