Can CBT for social phobia make symptoms worse?

Posted by JustWantToBeNormal on October 31, 2009, at 5:54:30

I apologize if this has been asked here before.

I had a 16-week session of CBT with a reputable psychologist who is also a professor at a major university.

As far as I know she followed a protocol very closely. We even had role-play exposures using interns.

My SP had been mostly concerning socializing/dating situations. I could function pretty well at work and with other day-to-day things, like going shopping or whatever.

Towards the end of the CBT, my anxiety and avoidance sky-rocketed and my self-esteem plummeted. And post-cbt, my condition continues to deteriorate. I'm even having trouble in situations where I didn't have trouble before. I also never used to be depressed, but I have been having spells of horrible depression since the treatment ended.

The doctor thinks I just need some extra sessions. But I am afraid it will make me worse and worse.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thank you for you time.
