Yes, it is hard.
I'm a great believer in redemption. I hate to say that tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life, because all the yesterdays influence who you are and how you react. Your past helps mold your present, but it doesn't have to determine your future. It might not be a straight line forward, but you can learn to think about things differently, and react to things differently.
Shame is such a destructive emotion. It isn't like guilt or regret. It pulls us down and keeps us in the past. You can't change what happened before today. All you can do is try to amend them by making different choices in the future. A therapist can help a lot with that.
People's memories are mercifully short, relatively speaking. And even better, their attention is largely on their own life, not what you have done.
