----flutterby: I was in psychoanalysis with a psychologist for more than three years...... for me it was like having a recipe but not having any of the ingredients. He would help me to "see" things I was doing and/or thinking that were dysfunctional-- but no steps to get beyond that.(and I certainly couldn't figure it out myself-- it felt to me that he expected me to have more insight than I had) I often left there feeling frustrated, confused and stuck. To move forward -- I've found CBT(cognitive behavioral therapy) work helps, I'm not "stuck" AS much...... but.... that is me and everyone is different.I read in some forums that some people would only ever have psychoanalysis for therapy as that is what helps them most....*shrugs*..... it must be an individual thing.
If you don't feel you're making progress or it's too slow-- maybe you should look into different types of therapy.... there's so many varieties out there! no reason to spin ones wheels for too long....
good luck to you
