Is there a Salvation Army in your town? I think sometimes they can help with a utility bill.
Still, sometimes it's more depressing to look for help and keep being turned away.
Last year and the year before, if I recall correctly, I qualified and received a utility credit from LIEAP (low income energy assistance program), but this year, after a cost-of-living-adjustment raised my social security disability benefit, I now make $6 or 7 too much per month to qualify for that aid.
