It's not by any means the only thing to be done.

An anarchic approach would be to say something like
'It turns me on when you treat me so badly.
We have to stop meeting like this,'
though I dunno about saying that to your father.

There are any number of disruptive things one could say that by their nature refuse to participate in the process
