At Adelaide University there was a program where people with severe trouble maintaining sleep through the night were wakened every 10 minutes for something like 36 hours.
They were allowed to go back to sleep for the duration, until the 10 minutes was up, at which point they were wakened again.
This was pretty stressful, but, after it was over, sleep was restored to something like a normal pattern.
