I think that sharing any hardship or trauma is a very bonding experience. I think there have even been studies about that, i.e. the more intense the experience, the stronger the bond. After decades of an abusive marriage, the experience with your church, and I don't know what else, you are bound to bond strongly to someone who knows about all that and supported you unconditionally throughout. Gratitude is also bonding, I think. So it's not too surprising that you feel so attached to him. I hope that you can find someone to replace him, Sassy, you so deserve happiness.
