This is actually not so rare. I can't take SSRIs for that reason, and at most my diagnosis would be bipolar II. Same with my daughter, and also with another friend who is bipolar. My p-doc will not prescribe SSRIs to anyone with any sort of bipolar traits or tendencies, and he's very careful with that. He says it happens a lot. If not outright mania or hypomania, it can cause rapid mood cycling or at least mood instability in susceptible individuals.

Philippa's suggestion is also a good one - to post this on the meds board. You'll get a wider range of responses there.
