It's not just you. :)
There have been several threads in the last few months discussing this very topic. I feel like I've said all I can say on it in those threads, and you might want to look in the archives.
Other people might be able to be of more immediate help to you.
If you look at Dr. Bob's welcome message for this page, it says "This is a message board for mutual support and education. It focuses on psychology and psychotherapy: different theoretical orientations and techniques, the therapy process, transference and countertransference, how to find a therapist, etc."
I'm sure that isn't all inclusive, but it does include the therapy relationship.
I'm really glad you found a therapy technique that worked for you. There are lots of different sorts of therapy techniques because there are lots of different sorts of clients and lots of different sorts of issues.
I've been seeing the same therapist for thirteen years, so I guess I qualify as someone who has had a protracted relationship with her therapist. This has proved useful to me, as evidenced by my healthier reactions in my relationships with others. I've found it useful, not everyone may have found it that useful. Certainly not everyone my therapist sees sees him for this long. I'm glad he's flexible to the needs of his clients.
I hope this has been at least of some usefulness to you, and I really urge you to check recent archives for very similar discussions.
