Therapists might benefit by giving attention to a new social group cohesion in intensive computer addiction and work: cyber cults. I have been thinking about some of the signs of cult behaviour i have noticed in members of nerd groups. I think that this intense computer life may lead to alienation from real life, family life, and form new bondings to replace old ones, such as marriage, fatherhood, non-computer friendships, etc. It is very similar to gang activity and religious conversion dynamics. It may be very attractive to people going through a vulnerable period in life, or depression, or a medical problem.
There is some very good literature on the net on this, and its effects on family life.
