Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But sometimes not...
The classic interpretation is that you are withholding something symbolized by the payment. Or you don't want to pay him - because it "taints" the feelings somehow. (he should do this because he cares about you, not because it is his job, etc.)
There are theories on unconsciously wishing to pick a fight, or stir things up by altering the routine.
Personally, I'm in favor of the plain old, "I have too much to think about right now" explanation.
Awhile back I forgot to deposit my paycheck. I was having a really bad couple of weeks, and I just spaced it. My therapy payment was returned -- I was mortified. But he didn't make a big deal out of it, he said he knew where to find me. :(
Will you call him or wait for next time?
