People say "it will get better". B______t. I just turned 57 and the "ideation" has been with with me since childhood. Obviously, I haven't done it yet, and most lightly never will. At least as you get older, you know you're getting closer to the end no matter what. Except that as you get older you start getting all the physical pain in addition to the emotional pain. I think people have the right to decide how much pain they're willing to bear, UNLESS they have kids. I think once you bring a child into the world you give up the right until the child is grown. Some people might say that you give up the right forever because the child didn't ask to be brought into the world and even as an adult the suicide of a parent would be devastating. Maybe. This is one reason I never had kids. But except for kids, who you chose to bring into the world, I think a person's right to decide how much pain they're able/willing to bear outweighs the right of other people to be spared the discomfort of knowing their friend or relative was suicidal. A person may unselfishly choose to spare them that discomfort, but it's their choice, not an obligation. I'm sure there are plenty of people who live their whole lives in excruciating pain and the people they're protecting haven't a clue.
