The secret is: have Thanksgiving with someone else's well adjusted family.
Thanksgiving with my family is a dangerous proposition, as I'm sure most of you can relate to. We alternate between going because we feel obligated and having the good sense to protect ourselves by staying home.
This year we were invited to join our neighbors' parents' big family Thanksgiving event. Our neighbors have a little boy the same age as our daughter and we practically live in each others' houses. So, they were kind of like family. The dad's parents and all of his siblings live in town. It was a wonderful day! Football in the backyard, full traditional dinner, stories and jokes and we even got to take home some leftovers.
I think I'll adopt his family for all of my upcoming family holidays.
