Next week I'm going to be on my old Tues/Fri schedule!! It feels like old times.
And the second half of this session felt like twice a week therapy!
I mentioned to him that we may be too comfortable with each other. He substituted "complacent". Maybe comfortable felt too personal. But he overall agreed that it's something that could happen in very long term therapy.
I reminded him of the scene from Dirty Dancing where he's teaching her to dance and fussing about her spaghetti arms, because there needs to be a certain tension in the space between them. I think he really liked that metaphor. I think he likes thinking of the dance of therapy anyway. He said he thinks we're on our way to getting on track, and that we do indeed need to be conscious of creating a good therapeutic space between us. We each need to figure out how we're contributing to spaghetti arms and try to fix it. I chided him a bit because I thought he was trained to know how to protect that space, and I shouldn't have to worry about it. But it was the good sort of disagreement. Good natured and full of humor.
It felt like home again, and I left smiling.
