In reply to splitting vs. dissociation website, posted by sunnydays on June 15, 2006, at 21:39:26
Hmm. That site confused me a bit. It seems that some people think splitting is the same as dissociation, and some people think it's a coping strategy in which a person mentally separates the good and bad aspects of someone or something (like the good father and bad father), so that they never recognize both at the same time. I always thought it was the latter that was one of the symptoms of borderline personality disorder, but this site says it's the former definition (dissociation). Maybe it's both.
I had always heard the latter definition in the counseling psych classes I've taken. I guess it's good to keep in mind that people don't always use that definition when they refer to splitting.
