Yep, happens all the time.
It's natural to admire attractiveness, and it's natural to notice and admire a person's better qualities. I've had male friends who were attractive in many senses of the word that I wasn't a bit in love with. It might have given the friendship a bit of energy that it might not otherwise have had, but that's it.
It sounds as if you're coming to a very good place with him, and I admire all the hard work you're doing.
Don't be too upset if you feel other things from time to time, though. Progress is rarely strictly linear, and when you're feeling particularly vulnerable those feelings might pop up again. But maybe now you can view them with some perspective from another place.
