I only had time to skim read many of the posts since my last one, but..

From everything I've read, and heard at lectures: memories of trauma aren't altered or repressed so that people can deal with them. Research shows that quite the opposite is true. Most victims have trouble not being able to forget traumatic memories.

I don't have time now to cite references - maybe later.
