Linehan's thought is that it is a (unfortunate) combination of factors.
-Predisposition to intense emotions
-Difficulty returning to emotional baseline (in regulating intense emotional states)
-Environmental factors mean that the subject doesn't learn how to regulate their emotional states
Thats part of it... I think there is more. Maybe do a search on Marsha Linehan and see what you can find or try and get hold of her book...
