If it was as easy as "just do it" -- don't you think we would?

For thousands of years people have self medicated (opiums, peyote), formed support groups, ranted, chanted and raged against their troubles and obsessions. People have been committing suicide for this long as well.

The evidence that human beings need help and support to get through hard times seems apparent. Why is it that getting support, in any form, is considered worse than pushing yourself to "just do it?"
