I agree with you. And, who decides what is normal? Normal is defined in the following way: according with, constituting, or not deviating from a norm, rule, or principle b : conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern. Rules, norms, standards and principles are all subjective and, I believe, are established to ensure conformity. But at what risk - the stifling creativity, individuality and passion? I may be off base here, but I think a case in point would be the story of Frances Farmer. Had she been born and lived in a different era, perhaps her colorful behaviour, her intelligence, her independence and her free spirit would not have been considered so erratic and unacceptable. Such a sad story.
