Mental illness in the media!!! ARRRGGH

Posted by pretty_paints on January 28, 2005, at 15:26:11

I'm soooo annoyed.

I've just been reading an article on gay.com. It was a really taking-the-mick article, going on about how "the rest of the world" was finally coming around to the idea of gay people in soaps and on tv. It had a real attitude to it, making out that EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WHO WASN'T GAY was in some way opposed to gay encounters/scenes in soaps. Blah blah blah. Like they were in some sort of community all to themselves.

Fine, I thought.

But I couldn't believe what I was reading when, as I scrolled down through the article it said...

"However while everyone gets up in arms about the latest lesbian addition, the old faithful, mad-as-a-box-of-fish Zoe Tate in Emmerdale seems to get more action than even the most well-heeled dyke about the city".

For anyone not in the UK or for those who don't know this soap, Zoe Tate is a character in Emmerdale who suffers from Schizophrenia.

I'm so MAD at how narrow-minded this is. It wouldn't have been SO bad if I would have just read it on the net somewhere. But in an article which was basically moaning about how narrow-minded "everyone in the world" is of the gay community, I would have thought she could more open-minded herself on the subject of mental illness.

She wanted the media to be more accepting of gay relationships, yet she herself couldn't be BOTHERED to be more accepting of people who have to endure the hell of mental illness. It's like "oh as long as something isn't anti-gay, it doesn't really matter".

GOD

There was EVEN a message board dedicated to reporting tv programs/news articles/newspapers/etc etc who discriminate or in some way wrong-do the gay community/gay relationships/gay people.

So I wrote a really bitchy reply on it, referencing this article on THEIR OWN WEBSITE.

(ps: sorry everyone about the rant, it just annoys me when people get so caught up in their own cause, that they just forget other situations and senarios. arrrgghh)

(pps: I think actually maybe I'm flying off the handle a bit. I'm feeling ARGH really angry. I'm coming off of Seroquel and it's making me feel lousy. Maybe on another day this article might not have gotten such a tongue-lashing. But today I just feel like ranting and raving like a monster!)

(ppps: So sorry to anyone that thinks I've been too harsh)
